A study on the design methods of “the garden city” planning by Yoshikazu Uchida: Focusing on the process of making his planning

Yoshikazu Uchida—the famous Japanese architect and the director of Dojunkai—made a residential plan named “garden city plan” just before Great Kanto Earthquake. In this study, authors report design methods his with focusing on process done by Uchida from 1919 to 1922. By making comparison between three drawings, following four are found out. First, has graded configuration street system. Second, shops placed around circular plazas along main road. Thirdly, there is diversity in arrangement public buildings. Fourthly, specific open space surrounded These share characteristics those Dojunkai's districts. Therefore, one reasons why Dojunkai realized modern planning its estates after Earthquake because had practiced above-mentioned drawings through plan.”
